Kerala Begins Rs 1.5 Crore Redevelopment of Vyttila Junction to Ease Chronic Traffic Congestion
The Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA) has commenced a Rs 1.5 crore project to redevelop Vyttila Junction, one of the state's busiest and most congested intersections. Work began on Sunday, June 21, with the aim of decongesting the area and improving traffic flow.
Despite the presence of a six-lane flyover commissioned in 2021, Vyttila Junction and its converging roads have remained severely bottlenecked. Previous proposals by the state government, including plans to reduce the size of medians and the roundabout beneath the flyover, were not implemented.
Uma Thomas, the local MLA in whose constituency Vyttila is situated, stated that she approached then Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar for funds to address the worsening congestion. Subsequently, Member of Parliament Hibi Eden conducted a site visit, leading to the adoption of a traffic plan prepared by the City Traffic Police. The KRSA provided the necessary funds.
Despite delays in starting the work, the contractor has agreed to complete the redevelopment within a stipulated timeframe. The works launched on Sunday include significant reduction of medians beneath the flyover that impede smooth traffic movement.
Present at the launch were Mayor V.K. Minimol, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Edappally Traffic) Sherif S., NHAI officials, councillors, traders, and members of the public.
