Tamil Nadu Minister's Budget Speech: CM Hailed as 'Jananayagan' and 'Vijay Mama'

Chennai: During the presentation of the Revised Budget Estimates in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, Finance Minister Marie Wilson referred to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as 'Jananayagan' (the title of his latest film) and 'Vijay Mama' (Uncle Vijay), in a speech that combined fiscal review with personal tribute.

The Minister, speaking on the floor of the House, said that within just three months of assuming office, the Chief Minister had earned a lasting place in the hearts of the people. She described him as becoming a part of every household — as a son, an elder brother, a younger brother, a life companion, a relative, and the embodiment of their emotions. These remarks were made in the context of the government's achievements and public reception since the new administration took charge.

Elsewhere in her speech, the Minister referred to the Chief Minister as 'Vijay Mama' to children, a term of endearment. She further stated that the Chief Minister had entered public life solely to repay his debt of gratitude to the people who had given him everything. According to the Minister, he overcame numerous conspiracies to secure a historic victory, for the sake of the people whom he loves as his own life and who, in turn, regard him as one of their own.

The use of cinematic titles and familial terms in an official budget presentation has drawn attention in political circles. While such praise is not unprecedented in Indian legislatures, it is notable for its prominence in a financial document speech. The Budget Estimates themselves were presented as part of the government's revised financial planning for the current fiscal year.

Observers noted that the Minister's remarks were in line with the ruling party's narrative of a popular leader. The Chief Minister, a former actor, entered politics recently and led his party to a decisive victory in the last assembly elections. The budget session continues, with further debates and discussions expected on the proposed estimates.

The Assembly has witnessed a series of speeches from treasury benches praising the leadership, but the Finance Minister's specific references to film titles and familial nicknames have sparked discussions about the blending of cinematic persona with governance. No opposition response to the Minister's remarks was immediately available as the House was adjourned for the day.
