Centre blocks 7,393 film piracy links, including 4,996 Telegram channels

The government has directed online intermediaries to block 7,393 links involved in film piracy, including 4,996 Telegram channels and 1,263 websites, according to a written reply tabled in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The disclosure was made by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan in response to a question about the circulation of pirated films, OTT shows, and other audiovisual content through Telegram and similar platforms.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting highlighted that the legal framework against online film piracy has been strengthened through amendments to the Cinematograph Act in 2023. These amendments introduced stricter penalties for unauthorised recording and distribution of films, and also empowered authorities to order the blocking of content that violates copyright. The move is seen as part of the government's broader effort to curb digital piracy, which has become increasingly prevalent with the rapid growth of streaming services and messaging applications.

Piracy remains a significant challenge for the Indian film industry, with pirated copies of movies often appearing on online platforms shortly after or even before theatrical release.
