Trump to visit India early next year, Rubio confirms
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that former President Donald Trump is expected to visit India early next year. The announcement came during a press briefing at the State Department, where Rubio stated that the visit is part of ongoing diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
"We have been in discussions with Indian counterparts, and I am pleased to confirm that President Trump will be travelling to India in the first quarter of next year," Rubio said. He did not specify exact dates but noted that the visit would focus on strengthening bilateral ties, trade cooperation, and security partnerships.
The visit would mark Trump's first trip to India since leaving office in 2021. During his presidency, Trump made a state visit to India in 2020, where he addressed a massive rally in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. That visit was highlighted by the 'Namaste Trump' event at the Motera Stadium.
Indian officials have welcomed the announcement. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "India looks forward to hosting former President Trump. Such visits underscore the deep and enduring friendship between our nations."
Analysts view the potential visit as significant given Trump's influence in the Republican Party and his possible candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. "This visit is a signal that Trump remains engaged in international affairs and values the India-US partnership," said Dr. Ananya Sharma, a foreign policy expert at the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi.
The visit is expected to cover discussions on defence cooperation, counter-terrorism, and economic partnerships. India and the US have strengthened ties over the past two decades, with increased collaboration in areas such as technology, space, and maritime security.
However, some trade issues remain unresolved, including tariffs on certain goods and market access for agricultural products. The visit may provide an opportunity to address these concerns.
No official itinerary has been released yet, but sources indicate that Trump may visit New Delhi and possibly Mumbai or Ahmedabad. Security preparations are expected to be extensive, given the high-profile nature of the visit.
The confirmation from Rubio comes amid a series of high-level exchanges between India and the US. Earlier this month, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan visited New Delhi for talks with his Indian counterpart. The two countries also conducted joint military exercises in the Indian Ocean region.
Trump's planned visit is likely to be watched closely by global media, as it will be his first major international trip since leaving the White House. It also reflects the continuity of strong bilateral relations regardless of changes in US administration.
