As PM Modi Visits, a Look at Indians' 250-Year Legacy in Seychelles

In 1770, five Indians arrived in Seychelles as plantation workers, alongside seven African slaves and 15 French colonists. These individuals are recorded as the first inhabitants of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Today, persons of Indian origin make up about 5% of Seychelles' population, a testament to centuries of migration and integration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's three-day visit to Seychelles, beginning March 11, 2025, underscores the deep ties between the two nations, located 4,000 kilometres apart. The visit includes bilateral meetings, cultural events, and discussions on maritime security, trade, and development cooperation.

Migration from India to Seychelles gained momentum in the 20th century, with arrivals from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and later Gujarat. These migrants worked as traders, labourers, and construction workers, contributing to the island's economy and society. Over generations, the Indian diaspora has become well integrated, with many holding prominent positions in business, government, and civil society.

India and Seychelles share strong diplomatic relations, rooted in historical ties and mutual interests. India has been a key development partner, providing assistance in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. The Indian Ocean security is a shared priority, with both countries cooperating on maritime surveillance and anti-piracy efforts.

PM Modi's visit is expected to sign agreements in areas such as renewable energy, digital connectivity, and capacity building. The visit also highlights the cultural bonds between the two countries, with Indian festivals, cuisine, and language influencing Seychellois life.

The journey from five plantation workers to a respected community underscores the enduring connection between India and Seychelles. As leaders meet, this legacy will continue to shape a partnership based on trust and shared aspirations.
