Tamil Nadu Governor: NEP 2020 aims to create job-givers
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar said on Thursday that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to create entrepreneurs out of students rather than just job-seekers. He was addressing the 50th Graduation Day of Guru Nanak College in Chennai.
“Is the aim of education simply to get a job? Am I to become a job-seeker? Or, am I to become a job-giver? That is what we have to decide,” the Governor said. He emphasised that education imparted in institutions should reflect the learnings of the soil, which would contribute to self-sufficiency and nation-building.
Mr. Arlekar described NEP 2020 as the first serious attempt to decolonise education in the country. He later distributed medals and certificates to students who topped their respective disciplines.
R.M. Ezhilarasi, Principal of Guru Nanak College, said the institution was founded in 1971 with 450 students enrolled in three undergraduate programmes. It has now grown to 7,000 students enrolled in 28 undergraduate, nine postgraduate, eight doctoral research programmes, and over 80 skill-based and value-added certificate courses.
The event was attended by Manjit Singh Nayyar, General Secretary and Correspondent of Guru Nanak College, and Anitha Mallisetty, Controller of Examinations.
