Sudden evening downpour drenches Hyderabad, causes minor waterlogging
Hyderabad witnessed a dramatic weather shift on August 2 as a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon gave way to dark clouds and sudden showers across several parts of the city after 4 p.m. The unanticipated rain caught commuters off guard and led to minor waterlogging at a few locations, though no major disruptions were reported.
The weather changed rapidly in the late afternoon, with thick clouds enveloping parts of the city, followed by spells of rain across central, western and northern Hyderabad. Motorists and pedestrians who had stepped out during the sunny conditions were caught in the downpour, with many seeking shelter under trees and bus stops. Visuals from the affected areas showed water accumulating on roads, particularly at low-lying points, causing vehicles to slow down.
According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the rainfall was unevenly distributed across the city. Keesara recorded the highest rainfall of 18.3 mm by 6 p.m., followed by Khairatabad at 17.8 mm, Banjara Hills at 14.3 mm, Gunfoundry at 13 mm, Masab Tank at 12.3 mm, Shaikpet at 12 mm, Gachibowli at 10.5 mm, Safilguda at 9.5 mm and Filmnagar at 9 mm. The figures indicate that some areas received more intense rainfall than others, but the overall effect was widespread.
The city administration was quick to respond. Traffic police personnel from the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates were deployed at major intersections to ensure smooth traffic movement and prevent congestion. Their presence helped manage the sudden influx of vehicles during the peak evening hours. Additionally, Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were pressed into service to clear waterlogged stretches and assist commuters.
Such sudden rain spells are not uncommon in Hyderabad during the monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. The city has experienced similar weather events in recent years, with authorities often advising residents to stay alert. While this particular spell did not cause significant damage, it serves as a reminder of the need for preparedness during the rainy season. The Telangana State Development Planning Society regularly monitors rainfall across the region, providing data that helps civic agencies respond effectively.
No major incidents or injuries were reported as of the time of filing. The weather department has indicated that further showers are possible in the coming days, and residents are advised to follow official updates. The quick response by the police and DRF teams ensured that traffic resumed to normalcy shortly after the rain subsided.
