Ram Mandir Trust Officials Resign Amid Donation Embezzlement Allegations; Eight Arrested

In a significant development concerning the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, two senior officials have resigned following allegations of fund misappropriation. Champat Rai, the Trust's general secretary, and trustee Anil Mishra stepped down on 'moral grounds' on Thursday, according to official statements.

The resignations come a day after eight individuals were arrested in connection with an FIR lodged over the alleged embezzlement of donations collected for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The arrests were made by the Uttar Pradesh Police after a complaint was filed by a devotee, claiming that funds were diverted from the temple's accounts.

The Trust, which oversees the construction and management of the grand temple at the disputed site, has maintained that it is cooperating fully with the investigation. 'We respect the legal process and have zero tolerance for any wrongdoing,' a Trust spokesperson said in a brief statement.

The accused individuals are believed to have been involved in the collection and handling of donations. The exact amount of funds allegedly embezzled has not been disclosed by authorities. The investigation is ongoing, with police examining financial records and transaction details.

Champat Rai, a close associate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been a key figure in the Ram Mandir movement for decades. His resignation is seen as an effort to maintain the Trust's credibility. Anil Mishra, a trustee known for his role in the legal battle for the temple, also submitted his resignation simultaneously.

Both men have denied any personal involvement in the alleged embezzlement but stated that they are stepping down to uphold the sanctity of the Trust. 'I have resigned on moral grounds so that the investigation is not hampered in any way,' Rai said in a letter to the Trust's chairman.

The Ram Mandir construction, which began in August 2020 after a historic Supreme Court verdict, has seen massive public donations. The Trust has raised thousands of crores of rupees through contributions from devotees across the country and abroad. The allegations of fund misuse have raised questions about oversight mechanisms.

Political leaders from the opposition have called for a thorough inquiry. Some have demanded that the Trust be placed under judicial monitoring until the investigation concludes. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged patience, stating that the legal process will take its course.

This incident highlights the challenges of managing large-scale public donations and the need for transparency in religious trusts. The Trust has announced that it will implement stricter financial controls going forward.
