Kerala to implement comprehensive sea rescue system, announces CM Satheesan

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Monday said the State will implement a comprehensive sea rescue mechanism to ensure the safety of fishermen venturing into the sea. The announcement came during a visit to the residence of Gautam Krishnan, a 26-year-old fisherman missing at sea since July 31 after a boat capsized off Neendakara.

Gautam's father and grandfather had lost their lives in the same accident. The Chief Minister, accompanied by Forest Minister Shibu Baby John, expressed condolences to the family and said search operations are continuing by integrating all available systems on a large scale, despite severe weather constraints.

Mr. Satheesan said the State will also develop a model weather forecasting framework for the entire country, with necessary funds already allocated in the Budget for this long-term vision. He said local knowledge and the active participation of traditional fishers will be incorporated into the new system.

To prevent future tragedies, the Chief Minister said steps will be taken to modernise and upgrade the coastal police forces and streamline operations across all maritime agencies. He also said time-bound construction of sea walls will be carried out to combat severe coastal erosion in the region.

Mr. Satheesan acknowledged the role of Mr. John, who represents the Chavara constituency, in coordinating efforts since the incident occurred, including giving regular hour-by-hour reviews of search progress to the Chief Minister.

District Collector Annie Jula Thomas, local political representatives, leaders of fisher organisations, and officials from various departments were also present during the visit.
