Erode: Trade unions, farmers protest against labour codes, seek policy rollback

Central trade unions and farmers' organisations held a protest near the Head Post Office in Erode on Monday (August 10, 2026), demanding the withdrawal of the four labour codes and opposing what they called the Union government's "anti-worker, anti-farmer and anti-people" policies.

The demonstration began with a procession from Periyar Nagar, moving through Gandhiji Road to the Head Post Office, where participants staged a picket. They raised slogans supporting a 10-point charter of demands, which included withdrawal of the labour codes notified in November 2025 and the rules issued in May 2026.

The protesters also called for an end to fixed-term employment, protection of trade union rights, an eight-hour workday and job security. In the agricultural sector, they demanded a statutory minimum support price for produce along with assured procurement. They also sought the withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025, and an end to privatisation of the power sector.

Other demands included fixing a minimum monthly wage of ₹26,000 for workers, including anganwadi, ASHA and part-time scheme workers. They urged restoration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act with 200 days of work per year and a daily wage of ₹700. The protesters also demanded restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, a complete waiver of farm loans, an end to privatisation of public sector enterprises, and stronger action against alleged question paper leaks.

Traffic on the road was disrupted as protesters blocked the thoroughfare. Police then removed 220 protesters and lodged them at a marriage hall, according to officials. No injuries were reported, and the protest ended peacefully.

The demonstration reflects ongoing discontent among labour and farmers' groups over recent legislative and policy changes. The labour codes, which consolidate rules on wages, industrial relations, social security and occupational safety, have been criticised by unions who argue they weaken worker protections. Similarly, farmers' organisations have long pressed for legal guarantees on crop prices. The government has maintained that the reforms are intended to simplify regulations and boost investment.

The protest in Erode was part of a broader response by central trade unions and farmer bodies, which have been mobilising across the country to press their demands. The 10-point charter, released earlier, has been a common platform for these groups.

Authorities in Erode said they took action to clear the road and ensure public convenience. A police official said, "We were forced to move the protesters to a nearby marriage hall after they blocked the road despite repeated requests. They were later allowed to leave."

Local traders and commuters complained about the disruption, though they expressed sympathy for the protesters' cause. "We understand their concerns, but blocking the road causes trouble for everyone," said S. Murugan, a shopkeeper on Gandhiji Road.

Organisers said they would continue their agitation until the government accepts their demands. "We are committed to protecting the rights of workers and farmers," said a union leader who did not wish to be named.

The incident highlights the ongoing friction between the Union government and organised labour over economic policies. As the debate continues, both sides are expected to hold further talks. The government has invited unions for discussions, but no concrete outcome has been announced so far.
