Philippines school shooting: Student kills classmate, self on campus
Zamboanga City, Philippines – A high school student opened fire at a university campus in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, killing a fellow student and then himself, according to local officials and police.
The incident took place at the Ateneo de Zamboanga university campus in Zamboanga City. Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said the suspect, a high school student, was carrying two firearms and appeared to have worn a body camera, possibly to livestream the attack.
The suspect first fired at a teacher, though it was not clear if the teacher was struck. He then shot a fellow student, who died at the scene, before turning the gun on himself, Mr. Olaso told DZBB radio network.
Two other people were injured during the attack, the mayor added. Police have not yet released the identities of those involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
The shooting comes less than two weeks after a school attack in Thailand, where a 14-year-old boy killed his grandparents, five school staff members and a 12-year-old girl in Nonthaburi province, outside Bangkok. That incident prompted Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to announce steps to restrict gun ownership in the country.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Asia, second only to Pakistan, and far above its Southeast Asian neighbours. The repeated school shootings in the region have raised concerns about youth access to firearms and the need for stronger preventive measures.
Authorities in Zamboanga City have not yet confirmed a motive for Tuesday's attack. They are reviewing any recorded footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from official sources.
