Russia strikes Ukraine's Danube port of Izmail, injuring four

Russia strikes Ukraine's Danube port of Izmail, injuring four

Ukrainian authorities reported on Monday that a Russian attack overnight struck port infrastructure in the Izmail district, located in the southern Odesa region. The authorities later said on the Telegram messaging app that fires caused by the attack had been extinguished.

In its own statement, Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had hit military targets in the port, describing them as a berthing terminal used for unloading vessels carrying military cargo, hangars housing Western military equipment, and depots for naval drones. Reuters could not independently verify the ministry's assertions.

Izmail, situated on the Danube River near the border with Romania, is home to Ukraine's largest port on the waterway. Since the breakdown of the Black Sea grain initiative, the Danube has emerged as a critical route for shipping Ukrainian agricultural produce. The port's strategic significance has made it a recurring target in the conflict, with both sides highlighting its role in the broader war effort.

In a separate strike on Odesa, Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces hit a patrol boat and fuel storage tanks. According to the regional governor, a civilian vessel flying the flag of Togo was damaged in the attack, and four people sustained injuries. The extent of the damage and the conditions of the injured were not immediately clear.

The overnight actions reflect a pattern of continued strikes on Ukrainian port facilities, which have drawn international concern over their impact on global food supplies. Ukraine is a major exporter of grain and oilseeds, and any disruption to its shipping capacity can affect prices and availability in many parts of the world. The United Nations and other humanitarian organisations have repeatedly urged all parties to avoid targeting civilian infrastructure and to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels.

Efforts to establish a renewed agreement on safe shipping in the Black Sea have yet to yield a breakthrough. In the meantime, ports on the Danube and the Black Sea continue to function under the shadow of military operations.

Independent verification of the latest strikes is difficult due to restrictions on journalist access to the conflict zone. Both Ukraine and Russia have issued differing accounts, and the full consequences of the attacks may take time to emerge.

Local authorities said that rescue and recovery operations were underway, and that further updates would be provided as the situation stabilises.

An American citizen was among the dead, prompting US President Donald Trump to say he was weighing whether to join Saudi strikes against the group.

Afghanistan says its forces killed 41 fighters from Pakistan; Islamabad yet to respond

Afghanistan's Defence Ministry says its forces killed 41 fighters and captured 62 in three days of clashes in Nuristan province, claiming they crossed from Pakistan with Islamabad's support. Kabul summoned Pakistan's chargé d'affaires to lodge a protest, while Pakistan has rejected similar claims in the past. Neither account has been independently verified, and the UN mission in Afghanistan says cross-border violence has caused over 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries this year.
