Mullaperiyar Dam Water Level Remains Safe at 111.80 Feet, Far Below Danger Mark

The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam stood at 111.80 feet on Friday morning, significantly below the maximum permissible storage level of 142 feet. The dam, located in Kerala's Idukki district, recorded an inflow of 59 cusecs and a discharge of 333 cusecs.

In the Vaigai dam in Tamil Nadu, the water level was 32.58 feet against its full capacity of 71 feet, with an inflow of 152 cusecs and a discharge of 86 cusecs.

The combined storage in the Periyar credit was 1,615.49 million cubic feet (mcft).

Rainfall data for the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. on Friday showed the Mullaperiyar dam area received 9 mm of rain, while Thekkady recorded 5.8 mm.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and maintain normal operations. The Mullaperiyar dam, built in 1895, is a vital water source for Tamil Nadu, but its safety has been a subject of periodic debate between the two states. Current readings indicate no immediate cause for concern.

A positive IOD has previously offset El Niño's effects, as seen in 1997 and 2019.
