Hawaii floods: 100 homes destroyed as Hurricane Lala skirts Big Island

Hawaii's Big Island has been hit by flash floods and mudslides after Hurricane Lala passed close to its coast, with about 100 homes uprooted from their foundations. One person was killed in a car accident, but Governor Josh Green said there did not appear to have been any wider loss of life, calling the outcome "amazing" given the scale of destruction.

The storm, which reached category one hurricane strength on Saturday, did not make landfall but still unleashed torrential rain across the island. In some areas, more than 32 inches (81 cm) of rain fell, sending water and debris cascading down mountainsides. The flooding and strong winds knocked out power to more than 200,000 households, leaving many residents without electricity overnight.

Although Lala has now weakened to a tropical storm and is tracking westward, south of the Hawaiian Islands, officials warn that the danger has not passed. The storm's eyewall came within 30 miles (48 km) of Big Island's South Point, bringing intense rain and dangerous conditions, according to Hawaii County. Emergency management teams are still responding to reports of flooded roads, damaged buildings, and landslides.

The National Hurricane Center said in its advisory on Sunday evening that Lala's maximum sustained winds had decreased to near 65 mph (105 km/h), after peaking at 91 mph (146 km/h) earlier. The storm is expected to continue weakening as it moves over cooler waters, but residents are urged to remain cautious as heavy rain could trigger further flooding.

Hawaii is no stranger to the effects of hurricanes, even though direct landfalls are rare. Passing storms can bring devastating rainfall and wind, as seen in this event. Local authorities have opened shelters and are working to restore power and clear roads. The full assessment of damage is ongoing, with officials saying it may take days to determine the complete impact.

The single confirmed death occurred in a traffic accident tied to the severe weather. Authorities have not released further details, but they emphasized that the quick response and preparedness likely prevented a higher toll.

As the storm continues its path away from the islands, the focus shifts to recovery. Governor Green has pledged state resources to assist the affected communities, and federal aid may be requested if needed. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid travel in affected areas until conditions improve.

Scientists Can Now Trace the Damage a Single Coal Mine or Gas Project Will Cause

Scientists have released an open-source tool that estimates how much a single fossil fuel project will warm the planet and the specific damage it will cause, from heatwave deaths in Europe to coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef. The Carbon Impacts Tracer applies established attribution science to individual coal, oil and gas developments, weakening the argument that any one project's emissions are too small to matter.
