Oxygen Depletion Suspected as Fish Kill Hits Palar River in Tirupattur

In a concerning development, a large number of fish were found dead in the Palar River at Madhanur village near Ambur town in Tirupattur district on Sunday. Officials from the Department of Fisheries attributed the deaths to a sharp depletion of oxygen levels in the water.

According to officials, most of the deceased fish were of the Jalebi variety, a species of Tilapia commonly found in fresh and brackish waterbodies. The department reportedly removed over 150 kg of dead fish on Thursday, while samples were collected for analysis to determine the exact cause.

Residents and local fishermen first noticed the dead fish floating along the riverbank and immediately alerted panchayat and fisheries officials. The sudden mass death has raised concerns among villagers, who depend heavily on the river for both irrigation and drinking water.

G. Ramesh, a local resident, expressed alarm over the incident. “The tank is also a key water source for irrigation in the village. Many civic bodies have also laid bore wells around the tank to pump water for domestic consumption. Such sudden death of fish should be probed, and the tank should be cleaned,” he said.

The Palar River, which is around 20 feet deep, serves as a lifeline for the region. It supports cultivation of paddy, banana, sugarcane, and groundnuts across a large tract of land in surrounding villages. More than 1,200 acres of farmland depend on the river for irrigation, and it also supplies drinking water to residents in the area. Over 15 bore wells have been dug along the riverbank to provide piped water to 12 surrounding villages.

A portion of the river is also used for commercial fish farming. Fish auctions are held once every three years, with the revenue used by the civic body to fund basic facilities in the town. Catla fish, ranging from two to four feet, are the major variety cultivated, alongside Jalebi. On average, three tonnes each of these major varieties are harvested annually and sold in local markets and towns such as Tirupattur, Jolarpet, Ambur, Vaniyambadi, and Gudiyatham.

The mass fish death has prompted calls for a thorough investigation and immediate remedial measures. Environmental experts note that oxygen depletion can occur due to sudden changes in water temperature, pollution, or the decomposition of organic matter. The fisheries department has stated that the collected samples will reveal the precise cause, and steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the river remains vital to the livelihoods and daily needs of thousands, local authorities face the dual challenge of cleaning the waterbody and ensuring sustainable use. The incident underscores the need for regular monitoring of water quality and proactive conservation efforts to protect both aquatic life and public health.
