Hawaii Braces for Possible First Direct Hurricane Hit Since 1992

Hawaii is on high alert as Hurricane Lala, a category one storm, churns off its coast. The system, packing winds of 75mph (120km/h), could bring the state its first direct hurricane landfall in 34 years.

The storm gained hurricane strength on Saturday. In a worst-case scenario, it could dump up to 25 inches (63cm) of rain on the Big Island and produce a storm surge of three feet, according to weather officials.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect for the Big Island. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Maui County, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Authorities have urged residents to prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions, including flash floods and mudslides.

The storm is expected to either make landfall or pass close to the southern tip of the Big Island on Saturday, before continuing west. Forecasters say Lala may weaken to a tropical storm as it moves past the other Hawaiian islands over the weekend.

Historical records show that the last hurricane to make landfall on Hawaii's Big Island was 155 years ago, according to the Associated Press. The last direct hit on any part of the state came in 1992, when Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai.

Emergency management officials are coordinating with local agencies and advising residents to stock supplies, secure property, and follow evacuation orders if issued. Shelters have been identified, and schools and government offices on affected islands have announced closures.

Residents in low-lying areas and near streams are being told to remain vigilant. The National Weather Service has warned of significant flooding and sediment runoff due to the steep terrain of the islands.

Forecast models show the storm's path shifting slightly south, but uncertainty remains. Officials emphasise that even a near miss can cause damaging winds, heavy rain, and dangerous surf.

This event underscores the vulnerability of island communities to tropical cyclones, which are relatively rare in Hawaii compared with other Pacific regions. The state's isolation and mountainous geography make preparedness essential.
