Indian Government Orders Meta to Remove Child Sexual Abuse Ads from Instagram

The Government of India has issued a strict directive to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, demanding the immediate removal of all paid advertisements and content on the platform that promotes child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

The directive, sent by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, requires Meta to provide a detailed explanation within seven days regarding how such advertisements were allowed on the platform and what safeguards are being implemented to prevent future occurrences.

This action follows reports that Instagram ads were being used to direct users to illegal content, including child sexual abuse material. The Ministry has warned of strict action under Indian law if Meta fails to comply with the order.

Meta has not yet issued a public response to the government's directive. The company has previously stated its commitment to child safety and has implemented measures to detect and remove CSAM, but this incident highlights ongoing challenges in content moderation on social media platforms.

The government's move is part of broader efforts to hold social media companies accountable for content on their platforms, particularly content that harms children. India's Information Technology Act and the recently enacted Digital Personal Data Protection Act provide a legal framework for such actions.

The directive underscores the constitutional responsibility of the state to protect children from exploitation and abuse, in line with India's commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
