Trump Picks Dr Heidi Overton to Lead FDA; Confirmation Battle Looms

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the nomination of Dr. Heidi Overton, a medical doctor and deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If confirmed by the Senate, Overton would take charge of an agency at the centre of contentious debates over drug pricing, vaccine policy, and abortion medication access.

Overton, described by Trump as a “smart and respected rockstar” in a Truth Social post, has been a key figure in several of the administration’s second-term health initiatives. Before joining the White House, she served as chief policy officer at the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank. She holds a medical degree from the University of New Mexico and a doctoral degree in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins University, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Her nomination comes amid a turbulent period for the FDA. The previous commissioner, Dr. Marty Makary, resigned in May, leaving unfinished work on ultraprocessed foods, antidepressants, and COVID-19 vaccines. Overton would inherit a delicate balancing act, needing to reconcile Trump’s priorities with the anti-regulatory stance of traditional Republicans and the anti-corporate agenda of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In recent months, Overton has appeared alongside Trump to announce key initiatives, including “most favored nation” drug pricing deals aimed at lowering costs to levels seen in other developed countries. She also stood by the president during his recent executive order seeking to split the combined measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine into separate immunisations, a move opposed by major medical groups. At that Oval Office event, she was present as Trump suggested a possible link between vaccines and rising autism rates—a claim that scientific consensus and decades of research have firmly rejected.

Overton’s record on reproductive health has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic senators. She has been openly critical of abortion pills, and if confirmed, she would be in a position to roll back FDA rules that expanded access to mifepristone, a drug used in nearly two-thirds of abortions in the United States. Medical professionals describe mifepristone, typically used with misoprostol, as “among the safest medications” ever approved by the FDA. Anti-abortion activists have expressed frustration that the administration has not acted to restrict online prescriptions of such pills, which they argue undermine state abortion bans.

Her confirmation is not assured. The Senate is narrowly controlled by Republicans, but the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee’s chair, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, a physician from Louisiana, has voiced “strong concerns” about her nomination. In a statement Wednesday, Cassidy cited her lack of managerial experience and her involvement in the recent vaccine order, calling the latter “almost disqualifying.” Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington went further, labelling Overton a “far-right, anti-abortion extremist who has no business leading the FDA.”

Kennedy, however, endorsed Overton on X, praising her “exceptional judgment, professionalism, discipline and an unwavering commitment to the American people.” The nomination now moves to the Senate committee for a hearing, where Overton will face questions on her qualifications, policy positions, and ability to lead an agency with vast influence over public health and the pharmaceutical industry.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
