Tamil Nadu police set up internal vigilance cells to check corruption, misconduct

The Tamil Nadu Police have established 'Internal Vigilance Cells' in every district and police commissionerate across the state, in a move aimed at strengthening integrity, transparency, and public confidence in the department.

The initiative, ordered by Director-General of Police and Head of Police Force Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, is designed to prevent, monitor, and investigate allegations of corruption, misconduct, and abuse of position by police personnel and officers.

To make reporting easier, the department has released district-wise and city-wise WhatsApp numbers for the public to lodge complaints. Citizens can now report instances of corruption, misconduct, abuse of authority, or any other unethical practice by police personnel through the designated numbers of their respective Internal Vigilance Cell, according to a statement from the police headquarters.

The department has urged citizens to actively use this facility to promote transparency, accountability, and corruption-free policing in Tamil Nadu. Officials have assured that the identity of complainants will be kept strictly confidential, and that no complainant will be subjected to harassment, intimidation, or retaliation for filing a complaint.

Dr. Aggarwal appealed to people to come forward and report grievances without fear, with the assurance that complaints would be received and dealt with in a fair, impartial, and timely manner. The functioning of the Internal Vigilance Cells will be monitored by senior police officers, the statement added.

This initiative is part of broader efforts within the police force to enhance internal accountability and address public grievances more effectively. The creation of dedicated vigilance cells at the local level is expected to expedite the handling of complaints and foster greater trust between the police and the communities they serve.

Citizens have been encouraged to note the relevant WhatsApp numbers for their districts or cities and use them responsibly. The department has requested that complaints be made in good faith, and has cautioned against the misuse of the facility.
