Tamil Nadu's 7.5% quota: 614 government school students get provisional MBBS/BDS seats

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department on Tuesday announced that 614 students from government schools have been provisionally allotted MBBS and BDS seats under the 7.5% reservation for the academic year 2026–2027. This marks a significant step in the state's efforts to increase access to professional medical education for students from economically and socially diverse backgrounds.

According to provisional allotment data furnished by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, 510 students were allotted MBBS seats and 104 students were allotted BDS seats. Of the 510 MBBS allotments, 323 students were placed in government medical colleges, 12 in ESI institutions, 166 in self-financing medical colleges, and nine in private universities. Among the 104 BDS allotments, 16 were in government institutions and 88 in self-financing dental colleges.

The community-wise breakdown of MBBS allotments includes 88 students from Scheduled Castes (SC), 15 from Scheduled Castes (Arunthathiyar) (SCA), six from Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 170 from Backward Classes (BC). For BDS seats, 15 students belong to SC, four to SCA, one to ST, and 27 to BC.

The 7.5% reservation scheme, which applies to students who have studied in government schools from Classes VI to XII, has emerged as a key pathway for talented students from less privileged backgrounds to enter medical and dental education. The School Education Department described the quota as a significant measure to uplift students from economically weaker sections and ensure their representation in professional courses.

This initiative is part of a broader state policy to promote educational equity. By reserving seats in medical and dental colleges for government school students, the government aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural educational opportunities and enable students from government schools to compete on a more equal footing with their peers from private institutions.

The provisional allotments are subject to verification of eligibility criteria, including the requirement that students must have studied in government schools continuously from Class VI to Class XII. The final list will be published after all documents are scrutinised and any discrepancies are resolved.

Officials said the move aligns with the constitutional principles of equality and social justice, ensuring that the benefits of higher education reach the most marginalised communities. The state has consistently implemented reservation policies to address historical disadvantages faced by certain sections of society.

Parents and student welfare organisations have welcomed the allotments, noting that many of the successful candidates are first-generation learners from rural areas who will now have the opportunity to pursue careers in medicine and dentistry. The government has also assured that adequate counselling and support will be provided to the allotted students to help them transition smoothly into their professional courses.

With the academic year 2026–2027 set to commence shortly, the selected students are expected to report to their respective institutions after the completion of admission formalities. The state health department will oversee the next steps in the admission process to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
