Trump Threatens Economic Punishment for Any Country Helping Iran

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced a major escalation of economic pressure against Iran on Wednesday, warning that any country providing assistance or business to the Islamic republic would face "tremendous" consequences.

In a series of posts on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the administration was launching the "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country". He described the initiative as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale".

"I am also announcing that any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face tremendous economic consequences," he wrote.

The president did not elaborate on the specific measures that would be taken, nor did he identify any countries by name. The remarks come nearly a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US would impose economic isolation on Iran "like the world has never seen before".

The announcement intensifies an already tense standoff that approaches its sixth month. The conflict, which has included periodic missile exchanges and an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, shows no immediate signs of resolution. The Iranians have continued to restrict shipping through the strategically vital waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is a key route for global oil supplies.

The blockade follows the collapse of what was described as a fragile US-Iran agreement to reopen the corridor. Despite recent lulls in missile strikes, the underlying disputes have remained unresolved. Both sides have said they exchanged messages in recent days, but on Tuesday Trump stated that talks were off. He also sparked controversy by suggesting on social media that the strait could become a "new US territory".

The crisis carries significant implications for the global economy. Around one-fifth of the world's petroleum trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Any sustained disruption would likely lead to a rise in oil prices and increase uncertainty in international markets.

Trump's latest move also raises the stakes for US allies and trading partners, many of which have economic ties with Tehran. The threat of secondary sanctions may compel some countries to reduce their dealings with Iran, while others could seek alternative channels to continue trade. The European Union and several other nations have previously sought to maintain the Iran nuclear deal and keep economic links open, though with limited success.

With the November elections approaching, the administration is under increased scrutiny at home over the handling of the conflict. Critics have questioned the strategy of economic pressure, while supporters argue it is necessary to curb Iran's regional influence and weapons programme.

Analysts note that the announcement could further complicate international diplomacy. The lack of a clear route out of the crisis heightens fears of a wider conflict, with potential consequences for regional stability and global security.

The situation remains fluid, with the international community closely watching for responses from countries that may be affected by the US threat. For now, the prospect of renewed talks appears distant, and the standoff shows no sign of easing.
