Delhi Government Launches 'Mission Kayakalp' to Modernise School Infrastructure Across Capital
The Delhi government has launched 'Mission Kayalap' to transform government schools in the national capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the initiative on Sunday, outlining plans for extensive infrastructure improvements in selected schools.
The programme aims to create safe, clean, and modern learning environments for students. Funding will come from government allocations as well as contributions from social organisations, market associations, local communities, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, according to Ms. Gupta.
A statement from the Chief Minister's Office described Mission Kayalap as 'a comprehensive campaign to transform government schools.' The work includes repairing school buildings, painting and whitewashing walls, waterproofing, improving rooftop drainage, renovating toilets, installing RO plants and water coolers, modernising science laboratories, developing facilities for children with special needs, beautifying campuses, increasing greenery, and ensuring a safe atmosphere.
Ms. Gupta said visible improvements have been made in two schools per revenue district as a starting point. In the North district, a sensory park for children with special needs at the Shankaracharya Marg school was renovated at a cost of approximately ₹16.20 lakh, along with installation of an RO plant and water coolers. At the government school in Roop Nagar, the physics laboratory was modernised to enhance practical learning.
'Schools that once had dilapidated buildings, damaged walls, old toilets and limited facilities are now emerging as clean, freshly painted campuses equipped with better facilities, along with a safer and more inspiring learning environment,' Ms. Gupta said.
In the South district, large-scale work was completed at Ramanujan Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Mehrauli, costing approximately ₹48.73 lakh, and at Sarvodaya Co-ed Senior Secondary School, Qutub Mehrauli, costing nearly ₹98.58 lakh. These projects included toilet renovation, sanitary fitting replacement, wall repairs, roof leak fixes, damaged plaster repairs, and repainting with weather-resistant paint.
The Chief Minister stated that improvements will steadily extend to more government schools with community participation.
