Bihar Cabinet Approves Four RRTS Corridors to Boost Regional Connectivity
Patna, July 9, 2026 – The Bihar cabinet on Wednesday granted in-principle approval for the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for four Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. The decision aims to develop a modern and integrated regional transport network in the state.
The cabinet approved an estimated expenditure of ₹31.59 crore for preparing the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and DPRs for the four proposed corridors. The work has been entrusted to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) on a nomination basis, said Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, during a post-cabinet briefing in Patna.
The four corridors are: Patna–Gaya Ji, Patna Airport–Begusarai, Patna–Hajipur–Proposed Sonepur Airport–Muzaffarpur, and Patna Airport–Ara. The RRTS is a semi-high-speed commuter rail network designed to connect metropolitan areas, providing safe, reliable, and environmentally sustainable last-mile connectivity.
In a separate statement, Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitish Mishra noted that rapid urbanization in Patna and surrounding areas, along with increasing passenger traffic and economic activities, necessitated the development of the RRTS.
Apart from the transport project, the cabinet took several other decisions. It extended the “Mukhya Mantri Swayam Sahayta Bhatta Yojana” (Chief Minister’s Self-Help Allowance Scheme) for five years from 2026-27 to 2030-31. An administrative approval of ₹300 crore was granted for the scheme in the financial year 2026-27.
The cabinet approved the acquisition of 26.76 acres of land for the expansion of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Patna, at an estimated cost of ₹348.89 crore. The expansion includes a Super Specialty Block, an Eye Centre, and other essential buildings to enhance tertiary healthcare services.
Additionally, the cabinet created 76 teaching posts for postgraduate (M.Tech) programmes across 10 government engineering colleges in the state. The posts include 9 professors, 29 associate professors, and 38 assistant professors.
The cabinet also decided to transfer five acres of land to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for 30 years at a token rent of ₹1 each for establishing three new Kendriya Vidyalayas in Madhubani, Munger, and Muzaffarpur districts.
