Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir: The leader who steadied Bangladesh's BNP

In 1961, the military regime of General Ayub Khan in Pakistan sought to suppress cultural expressions of Bengali identity by outlawing celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore's birth centenary in East Pakistan. The move, intended to consolidate control, had the opposite effect: campuses across the region erupted in protest. These demonstrations sowed the seeds of a political awakening that would eventually culminate in Bangladesh's independence a decade later.

Among the many young people shaped by those events was Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a Dhaka University student who would go on to become one of the most enduring figures in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). His early exposure to agitational politics and the demand for a new nation informed his lifelong commitment to democratic principles and constitutional processes.

Alamgir's political career has been defined by resilience and an almost unbounded capacity for work. Colleagues recall his ability to sit through marathon meetings, sustained only by cups of tea, while meticulously examining every detail of party matters. That work ethic placed him in a select group of leaders who could match the legendary stamina of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who herself was known for relentless engagement with the party's cadre.

In 2015, during a time when the Sheikh Hasina government had tightened political space, Alamgir's late-night dedication drew a concerned remark from Zia. On one occasion, when he was leaving the party's Gulshan office at 2 a.m., Zia cautioned him about the risks of moving around without adequate security and party workers. "They can detain you for plotting protests in the city if they find you without adequate party workers around," she warned. Alamgir acknowledged the danger but remained committed to his duties, embodying the understated determination that has marked his career.

Over more than four decades in politics, Alamgir has faced arrests, detentions and restrictive government policies. Through each phase, he worked to keep the BNP organised and cohesive, often at great personal cost. His ability to survive political storms and maintain the confidence of both the party leadership and grassroots workers earned him a reputation as a steadying influence.

The political landscape shifted dramatically in August 2024, when protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down and leave the country. In the aftermath, Alamgir, who had been serving as BNP's acting chairman, became a central figure in efforts to stabilise the party and navigate the transition. Political observers credit his measured style and experience with helping the BNP avoid fragmentation during a period of enormous uncertainty.

Alamgir's journey reflects the broader trajectory of Bangladesh's democratic struggle, from the anti-authoritarian movements of the 1960s to the complex transitions of the present. As a senior opposition leader, he has often occupied a position of responsibility in shaping the country's political discourse. His emphasis on dialogue and adherence to constitutional norms has been widely noted by supporters and critics alike.

As Bangladesh moves forward, the challenges of institutional building and democratic consolidation remain. In Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP has a leader whose endurance and commitment have helped the party endure its own trials. The "ship" he has steadied may face more turbulent waters, but his steady hand continues to provide a sense of continuity.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
