Mumbai Ganesh Idol Fall Kills Two, Injures Five During Arrival Ceremony

Two persons died and five others, including two children, were injured when a large Ganesh idol fell during an arrival ceremony in south Mumbai late Saturday night, civic officials said.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on August 22, 2026, at Jay Ambe Chowk near Kabutarkhana on Balaram Merchant Road in the densely populated Bhuleshwar area. The idol, belonging to the 'Bhuleshwaracha Raja' pandal, toppled while being carried in a procession to its venue for the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival.

Police, fire brigade personnel, ambulance services, and civic ward staff were immediately deployed to the site after receiving the information. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where two individuals were declared dead on arrival, a civic official said on Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Sanket Nevshe (33) and Brijesh Hemant Joshi (30). The injured — Vaibhav Ghenand (38), Pawan Chaurasiya (25), Lavanya Ganer (5), Divya Ganer (7), and Kunal Kashid (26) — are undergoing treatment, and officials said their condition is stable.

Ganeshotsav, one of the biggest and most widely celebrated festivals in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra, begins on September 14 this year. The 10-day festival, which concludes with the Visarjan on September 24, involves the installation of idols of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed deity, in homes and public pandals across the state.

The festival has been a significant part of Maharashtra's cultural landscape since the late 19th century, when social reformer Bal Gangadhar Tilak promoted public celebrations as a means of bringing communities together. Today, the occasion is marked by elaborate pandals, artistic idols, and a series of processions, especially in Mumbai's older neighbourhoods.

Every year during the Ganeshotsav, thousands of idols are installed across Mumbai. Many are brought to pandals in processions that draw large crowds, occasionally causing traffic disruptions. Volunteers and community groups work together to manage the events, but the movement of heavy idols through narrow lanes remains a challenge.

Bhuleshwar, located in the heart of south Mumbai, is one such area known for its intense festive activity. The 'Bhuleshwaracha Raja' is among the most prominent local idols, and its annual arrival attracts a large number of devotees and onlookers. The procession typically passes through narrow streets lined with shops and residential buildings.

The cause of the accident has not been officially determined. According to a civic official, the incident is being examined, and further details may be released after an assessment. No official statement has yet been made regarding any lapses or precautionary measures.

While such incidents are rare, they draw attention to the potential risks involved in moving heavy idols through crowded lanes. Organisers often rely on manual carriers or cranes, depending on the size and weight of the idol. Safety during festival processions has been a recurring subject of discussion among civic authorities and local community groups.

Following the tragedy, people in the area gathered at the spot, and several expressed shock and grief. Police have urged calm and have asked the public to cooperate with officials during the upcoming festival days. The incident has cast a shadow over the forthcoming celebrations, with residents discussing the need for better safety measures during such processions.

Further details are awaited. This report will be updated when more information becomes available.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
