Amit Shah orders CISF to implement 'zero coal leakage' plan in Jharkhand
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Ministry of Coal to establish rapid response teams and enforce a 'zero coal leakage plan' to address the rise in illegal mining and coal theft in Jharkhand, officials said on [date].
The directive, issued during a high-level review meeting, calls for multi-layered security deployment in vulnerable zones across the state. Agencies have been empowered to file cases, conduct searches, and seize illegally mined coal and equipment without prior approval, streamlining enforcement procedures.
Shah emphasised the need for rigorous and coordinated action among state and central agencies, including regular reviews to monitor progress. The 'zero coal leakage' strategy aims to plug revenue losses and curb the illegal trade that fuels corruption and funds unlawful activities in the region.
Jharkhand, rich in mineral resources, has long struggled with illegal mining. The new measures are part of a broader government push to tighten control over natural resource extraction and ensure compliance with mining laws. Officials said the rapid response teams will be deployed in areas identified as high-risk, equipped with surveillance technology and quick-reaction capabilities.
The Home Minister also stressed the importance of community involvement in reporting illegal activities, while safeguarding the rights of legitimate miners and local residents. The move is expected to reduce coal theft significantly, which has been estimated to cost the exchequer crores of rupees annually.
Details on the timeline for implementation and specific zones to be covered are awaited. The Ministry of Coal and CISF have been asked to submit a detailed action plan within a week.
