US House Passes Record $1.15 Trillion Defence Bill Amid Deep Partisan Divide
The United States House of Representatives narrowly approved a record $1.15 trillion defence policy bill on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, highlighting deepening political divisions as the Iran conflict continues. The 2027 National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) passed by a vote of 216-212, a stark contrast to the broad bipartisan support such legislation has traditionally enjoyed.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where its fate remains uncertain. It authorises approximately $250 billion more than the 2026 NDAA, including a 5–7% pay raise for service members. House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the legislation, stating, "This legislation provides our brave service members with an overdue pay raise, strengthens our nuclear deterrence and missile defence — including construction of the Golden Dome."
The Golden Dome missile defence system, championed by President Donald Trump, is modelled after Israel's Iron Dome and aims to protect the US mainland from missile attacks. House Armed Services Committee Republicans said the bill would help "rebuild depleted stockpiles" as the US expends large amounts of munitions in its war against Iran.
Democratic Representative Jerry Nadler criticised the bill, saying he could not vote to give President Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth "$1.15 TRILLION for their out-of-control military spending and irresponsible actions." He added, "The NDAA is a costly, bad bill that funds an illegal war and undermines our democracy."
Adding to the controversy, the NDAA includes President Trump's "SAVE America Act," which would introduce new nationwide voting restrictions. The measure was attached through a procedural manoeuvre, drawing sharp criticism from Democrats and potentially complicating the bill's passage in the Senate.
Another contentious provision calls for increased cooperation between the US and Israeli armed forces, sparking debate in recent weeks. The overall package reflects the growing polarization in American politics, even on matters of national defence that once enjoyed consensus support.
