Tamil Nadu to set up advisory board to combat crimes against women and children

The Tamil Nadu government will establish a State Advisory Board to advise on preventing crimes against women and children, eliminating the use of narcotic substances, and expediting legal cases related to these issues, Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar announced in the Assembly on Friday.

The Minister detailed the board's mandate, stating it would serve as a consultative body to guide policy and improve the efficiency of the justice system in handling sensitive cases. The announcement underscores the government's focus on strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to address public safety concerns.

During his address, Mr. Nirmal Kumar also announced the creation of the Tamil Nadu Law Compilation Web Portal. This online platform is intended to provide public access to enactments, amendments to bills, and other legislative documents in Tamil Nadu, promoting transparency and ease of access to legal information.

In the higher education sector, the government announced that postgraduate LLM degrees will be introduced at Government Law Colleges in Salem, Namakkal, Theni, and Karaikudi from the academic year 2026-27. This initiative aims to expand advanced legal education opportunities across the state.

The Minister also made a reference to the Tamil Nadu Student Hostel and Accommodation Corporation (TNSHIC) in the context of the Government Law Colleges at Vellore and Chengalpattu, though details of the specific proposal were not elaborated in the Assembly.

To enhance security and infrastructure, CCTV cameras will be installed in 12 Government Law Colleges across the state. These include the Chennai Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, and institutions in Pattarai Perumbudur, Pudukottai, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Koyambuthur, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, and Dharmapuri.

Further modernising legal education, the Minister announced an end-to-end examination automation system and an online valuation system for the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. These measures are expected to streamline examination processes, reduce delays, and bring greater accuracy to assessments.

The announcements were part of the Minister's reply to the demands for grants in the state legislative assembly. The government has not yet released a timeline for the formation of the advisory board or the operationalisation of the web portal.
