Delhi: Six Injured in Knife Attacks on Strangers in Mangolpuri; Police Suspect Old Enmity

New Delhi: At least six people were injured on Friday evening after a group of men allegedly attacked passersby with knives in the Mangolpuri area of northwest Delhi, police said. The attacks took place in three separate lanes within the L Block of the locality, spreading panic among residents.

The injured were rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where two of them were later referred to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable, according to hospital sources, though official confirmation from the police is awaited.

Police teams reached the spot after receiving distress calls and have launched a search for the accused. Officials said they are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify and apprehend the suspects. A preliminary inquiry suggests that an old enmity may have triggered the attack, but the police have not yet established a clear motive.

“We are examining all angles. The statement of victims and witnesses is being recorded. Initial information points to a possible feud, but nothing is confirmed,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

According to police, some of the suspects are believed to be minors. However, the number of attackers and their exact identities have not been ascertained. The investigating team is also verifying whether the attackers acted alone or were part of a larger group.

Meanwhile, local residents have alleged that the attackers also robbed a few people before fleeing. They claimed that the incident created a sense of fear in the neighbourhood, with many residents preferring to stay indoors after dark. Police said they have taken note of the robbery allegations and are investigating them separately.

“The area has become unsafe. Such incidents were not common here earlier. We demand strict action against the culprits,” said a local shopkeeper, who did not wish to be named.

Police have appealed to the public to share any information about the incident. A helpline number has also been issued for citizens to provide anonymous tips.

This is not an isolated incident in the capital. In recent months, several cases of street violence have been reported in different parts of Delhi, raising concerns about public safety. However, police data suggests that overall crime has remained under control, and such attacks are often linked to personal disputes rather than random acts of violence.

Authorities have increased patrolling in the Mangolpuri area following the attack. Additional police personnel have been deployed to reassure residents and prevent any further escalation. The investigation is ongoing, and arrests are expected soon, police said.
