Unauthorized Demolition in Karol Bagh Claims Labourer's Life, Three Injured
New Delhi: A three-storey building collapsed during demolition work in the Regarpura area of Karol Bagh on Friday, resulting in the death of a labourer and injuries to three others, police said. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition.
The incident occurred at approximately 11.15 a.m. at a residential building on Pyare Lal Road. According to preliminary findings, the building was being demolished by a private contractor engaged by the owners. The police stated that no permission had been obtained from the concerned agency for the demolition.
Senior police officials confirmed that the building owners and the contractor have been detained for questioning. Further legal action will be initiated after verification of the facts, a senior officer said.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a call regarding the collapse at 11.49 a.m. and promptly dispatched a rescue team to the site. Those trapped were pulled out from under the debris. One of the labourers, identified as Sheikh Shamshad, succumbed to his injuries.
Among the injured, Mohammad Ayub sustained a head injury and a fracture on his right hand. He was referred to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where his condition remains critical. Sheikh Saidul suffered limb injuries and is undergoing treatment at Jeevan Mala Hospital. Rafik-Ul, the third injured labourer, sustained minor injuries and was later discharged, police said.
A DFS officer reported that the ground floor and two upper floors collapsed during the demolition work, trapping the labourers beneath the rubble.
This incident highlights the dangers of unauthorized demolition activities in urban areas. Under Delhi municipal regulations, demolition of buildings requires prior approval from the local authorities to ensure structural safety and the protection of workers and nearby residents. Violations can lead to legal consequences, including penalties and prosecution for the responsible parties.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the collapse, including whether proper safety protocols were followed. The police have assured that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents in the future.
