TNEA 2026: Seat allotment drops 4.5% in second round, less than half filled

Chennai: The second round of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 counselling has resulted in provisional allotments for fewer than 89,000 candidates — less than 45% of the total seats on offer, according to official data released by the authorities.

This represents a decline of about 4.5% in seat allotment compared to the corresponding stage in the previous academic year. Career counsellors tracking the process say this could translate into several thousand seats remaining vacant once the counselling concludes.

Stream preferences this year continue to favour Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), consistent with recent trends. However, there has been a marginal increase in demand for core engineering streams such as Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Mechanical Engineering, counsellors observed.

Institutional choices display a clear urban divide. Colleges situated in or near cities like Chennai and Coimbatore are drawing more applications, said Jayaprakash Gandhi, a senior career guidance counsellor. He attributed this to better industry connections, internship opportunities, and placement records. “These institutions have greater industry-institution interaction and offer larger scope for students to earn internships. This helps them in their career,” he said.

Mr. Gandhi also pointed out that several high-scoring students received allotments only in the second round, which he said reflects the additional difficulties faced by rural students in participating effectively in the online counselling process. “The government or the Anna University needs to look at ways to bridge this gap,” he added.

The data also indicates a marked preference for autonomous engineering colleges. More than 80% of seats in autonomous institutions have been filled by the end of the second round, while non-autonomous colleges have filled less than 20% of their seats. R. Ashwin, another career counsellor, noted that Anna University's constituent colleges have seen a 10% drop in intake compared to the previous year. He suggested that the institution's academic results and placement support may be influencing student decisions.

“This could be because the pass percentage in these colleges have not been encouraging, as per semester-wise results published by the Anna University. Besides, they also do not concentrate on campus placements,” Mr. Ashwin said.

Meanwhile, seven institutions have already recorded full intake, while more than 20 colleges have yet to fill even a single seat. The third round of choice filling is now open on the official TNEA portal, with the deadline set for 5 p.m. on August 19.

The TNEA counselling process is conducted by Anna University for admissions to B.E., B.Tech., and similar programmes across Tamil Nadu. It operates through multiple rounds, allowing candidates to modify their choices based on seat availability and cut-off marks. The lower-than-expected turnout in the second round is likely to push colleges to reassess their strategies, especially those in rural areas struggling to attract students.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
