SRCW and UYIR Join Forces to Strengthen Road Safety in Coimbatore
Sri Ramakrishna College for Women (SRCW) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UYIR, a Coimbatore-based road safety non-governmental organisation, to enhance road safety awareness among its students. The collaboration aims to reduce preventable road accident deaths and promote safer road behaviour within the community.
The MoU was signed by SRCW Principal Chitra and R. Satish, mentor of the Education Vertical at UYIR and head of Administration at LMW. Praveen, Deputy General Manager of Administration and Hospitality at LMW, along with faculty members and students, were present on the occasion.
SRCW already hosts a UYIR Road Safety Club, through which students have been participating in various road safety initiatives. The new agreement is expected to expand these activities and encourage greater involvement from both students and faculty. The partnership will focus on awareness campaigns, safety training, and peer-led education programmes.
Speaking to the students, Mr. Satish highlighted that road accident deaths are largely preventable. He noted that around 300 people had died in road accidents in Coimbatore during the first half of 2026, with many of the victims being pedestrians. He stressed the importance of following traffic rules and urged students to spread awareness among their families and friends. "Safe practices should begin at home," he said.
Mr. Satish called upon the students to become road safety ambassadors in their localities. He emphasised that small behavioural changes, such as wearing helmets, using seat belts, and respecting pedestrian crossings, can significantly reduce fatalities. The MoU is seen as a step towards building a culture of safety and responsibility among young citizens in the city.
