New immigration rule: International flyers to skip boarding pass stamps from Sept 1

International travellers will no longer need to get their physical boarding passes stamped by immigration authorities at Indian airports from September 1, according to an official announcement. The change is part of a broader modernisation drive aimed at streamlining passenger clearance and reducing inconvenience.

The Bureau of Immigration, which manages immigration services at airports, will now accept electronic boarding passes displayed on smartphones for clearance purposes. This move is expected to speed up the process, particularly during peak travel hours, and reduce the need for physical paperwork.

In addition to this, a pilot project is already underway to eliminate immigration stamping for Indian passport holders altogether. Under the pilot, eligible passengers can exit and enter the country without having their passports physically stamped, provided they use the e-boarding pass system. The pilot is being tested at select airports and may be expanded based on its success and passenger feedback.

The decision comes as part of the government's broader push towards digital transformation in public services. Over the past decade, several initiatives such as e-visas, biometric-enabled immigration clearance, and the DigiYatra programme have been introduced to make air travel smoother and more secure.

Officials say the new rule will not compromise security. The electronic boarding pass contains a secure barcode that immigration officers can scan to verify a passenger's flight details and travel documents. For those who do not have a smartphone or are unable to produce an e-boarding pass, the physical boarding pass will still be accepted, but it will not be stamped. Instead, the passenger's entry or exit will be recorded electronically in the immigration system.

This change is expected to benefit a large number of travellers, especially those who frequently fly internationally. Previously, passengers had to queue at counters to get their boarding passes stamped after passing through immigration, a step often seen as redundant and time-consuming. By eliminating this requirement for e-boarding pass holders, the process becomes more efficient.

However, some travellers have expressed concerns about relying on smartphones for such essential procedures. Issues such as low battery, network failure, or a damaged screen could cause inconvenience. Officials counter that the Bureau of Immigration is aware of such concerns and has put in place a contingency by accepting physical boarding passes as well, though without stamping. The electronic record will be the definitive proof of clearance.

The pilot project on eliminating stamping for Indian passport holders is being monitored closely. If successful, it could be extended to all Indian citizens and eventually to foreign nationals as well. This would align India with several other countries that have already moved away from rubber-stamping passports, using electronic systems to track arrivals and departures.

Airport authorities and airlines are being coordinated with to ensure smooth implementation. Passengers are advised to keep their smartphones charged and to ensure their e-boarding passes are downloaded before reaching the immigration counter.

The move is part of a larger vision to modernise India's immigration infrastructure. The Bureau of Immigration has been rolling out e-gates, automated kiosks, and face-recognition technology at major airports. These steps are intended to balance efficiency with security, ensuring that the country remains ready for the increasing volume of international travel.

As the September 1 deadline approaches, officials urge travellers to familiarise themselves with the new process. While the change may take some getting used to, it is expected to make international travel from India faster and more pleasant in the long run.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
