Orange Alert Issued for Three Kerala Districts as Monsoon Intensifies
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for three districts in Kerala—Kannur, Wayanad and Kozhikode—for Thursday, July 30, 2026, warning of very heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon strengthens after a brief lull.
A yellow alert has been declared for the remaining districts of the state, with the exception of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha, where isolated heavy rain is expected. The IMD's weather bulletin attributes the revived monsoon activity to a deep depression over central Chhattisgarh and adjoining north interior Odisha, which has enhanced moisture incursion over Kerala.
The IMD has also issued a multi-day heavy rainfall warning for the state. On Friday, July 31, an orange alert will be in effect for Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki, while a yellow alert covers the rest of Kerala. By Saturday, August 1, the rainfall intensity is expected to shift southward, with an orange alert for seven districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam, and a yellow alert for the remaining areas.
Residents and local authorities in the alerted districts are advised to remain vigilant against potential flooding, landslides and waterlogging, especially in hilly and low-lying areas. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea along the Kerala coast due to rough conditions.
