Monsoon Gains Strength: IMD Predicts Heavy Rain in Eastern, Central India as Depression Intensifies

The southwest monsoon, after a prolonged lull, has regained momentum. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across large parts of eastern, central, and northwestern India over the coming days, as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify.

According to the IMD, the depression was centered over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts on Sunday morning. It is expected to move northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. The system is likely to cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around forenoon or noon on Monday.

In light of this development, the IMD has issued warnings for extremely heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha over the next few days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha and West Bengal coasts until the depression crosses the land. Authorities in the affected states have been put on alert, and measures are being taken to ensure preparedness for potential flooding and landslides.

The revival of the monsoon is crucial for the kharif crop season, as it brings much-needed moisture to rain-fed agricultural areas. However, the intensity of the rainfall may also lead to disruptions in daily life, damage to infrastructure, and poses risks to vulnerable populations. Residents in the forecast zones are advised to stay informed about weather updates and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
