Kerala Homemaker Honoured for Sparking Anti-Drug Campaign 12 Years Ago
Kerala's Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Thursday presented the 'Toofan Warrior' badge to Mini Antony, a homemaker from Elamkunnapuzha village, in recognition of her role in alerting authorities to rising drug abuse among school students in 2014. The event marked the constituency-level phase of the state's current anti-drug crackdown, 'Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt.'
Mini Antony's warning about increasing narcotics use among teenagers and young people in her coastal village prompted the then Congress-led government under Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to launch the 'Clean Campus, Safe Campus' campaign later that year, according to Chennithala, who also served as Home Minister at the time.
Speaking at the inauguration in Kochi, Chennithala noted that Mini's intervention had drawn the government's attention to the growing drug menace and led to a coordinated response. The current crackdown, 'Operation Toofan,' aims to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and abuse across the state.
The honouring of Mini Antony highlights the role of community vigilance in combating drug abuse. Authorities have encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities related to narcotics to assist law enforcement in curbing the drug trade.
