Jharkhand Government Announces Cancellation of JPSC Prelims Amid Recruitment Probe

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced on Tuesday that the state government is prepared to cancel the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) preliminary examination and the associated backlog examinations. The announcement follows 19 days of student protests over alleged irregularities in the recruitment examinations conducted by JPSC and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

Addressing the state assembly, Soren said that examinations conducted by TDPL, a Lucknow-based IT vendor, will be investigated. He also stated that experts from premier institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will be consulted to reform the recruitment examination system.

The student agitation, which has been ongoing for 19 days, saw an escalation on Monday when police used batons to disperse a march towards the assembly. According to reports, protesters regrouped late at night at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium and resumed their sit-in. The protests have been driven by allegations of irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC exams, with students demanding a fair and transparent recruitment process.

During the chief minister's speech, the assembly witnessed continuous sloganeering and protests by opposition members, according to the Indo-Asian News Services (IANS). Despite the ruckus, Soren asserted that the government had already taken a decision on the examination-related issues and would proceed with its plans regardless of opposition protests.

Taking aim at TDPL, the agency responsible for conducting the exams, Soren noted that the company is based in Uttar Pradesh and has links with Bihar. He alleged that such agencies have been allowed to compromise the future of Jharkhand's youth, as per IANS.

Soren reiterated that the government will not hesitate to order investigations into examinations that have attracted complaints, allegations, and suspicions. He emphasised that the government is committed to making the recruitment process more transparent, credible, and secure.

In response to Monday's police action, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a statewide Jharkhand bandh. The party has been critical of the government's handling of the protests and the recruitment process.

Defending the police action, Soren said that the administration and police had acted with restraint during the protest. He pointed out that security restrictions are routinely enforced around constitutional institutions such as the Assembly, Parliament, and Legislative Councils, yet demonstrators managed to reach close to the assembly premises.

The development marks a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by the students. However, the exact details of the cancellation and the scope of the investigation are yet to be officially outlined. The government has indicated that it will consult experts to ensure the integrity of future recruitment exams.

The protests in Ranchi continue, with students and political parties closely watching the next moves of the state government. The announcement, while welcomed by many, has also raised questions about the timeline for fresh examinations and the impact on candidates who had prepared for the cancelled tests.
