Kerala Heavy Rains: Red Alert Issued for Nine Districts, Orange for Five
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for nine districts in Kerala, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert covers Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. The remaining five districts have been placed under an orange alert, with very heavy rainfall expected on August 1, 2026.
A red alert signifies rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in a day, indicating conditions that could lead to severe flooding and landslides. An orange alert is issued for rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, which may cause significant disruption. Kerala's geography—a narrow coastal strip backed by the Western Ghats—makes it highly susceptible to rain-related calamities, especially landslips in hilly terrains.
In response to the ongoing heavy rain and reports of landslips and mudslides, Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan has contacted the Revenue Minister, the Chief Secretary, and district collectors. The Revenue Minister will coordinate disaster prevention efforts and has called a meeting of district collectors at 11 a.m. The Chief Minister stated that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and other agencies are ready to handle any emergency.
A landslip in Idukki district has reportedly led to at least one death, though official confirmation is awaited. Rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas.
The IMD has advised residents in the red alert districts to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel. People living near rivers, slopes, and other vulnerable zones have been urged to stay vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities. District administrations have been directed to ensure that all safety protocols are in place and that essential supplies and relief measures are available.
Kerala has witnessed several devastating monsoon events in the past, and the state government is emphasising preparedness and prompt response. With the red alert in effect, officials are closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as the weather system evolves.
