Kerala Coast on Alert: High Waves and Erosion Risk Until August 6 Night
The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a swell surge alert, locally known as Kallakkadal, for the coastal belt stretching from Alappad to Edava in Kerala’s Kollam district. According to the advisory, high waves reaching up to 1.6 metres in height are expected along this coastline until 11:30 p.m. on August 6. The alert also warns of potential coastal erosion and sea water incursions into low-lying areas.
Kallakkadal is a sudden swell surge that occurs when ocean waves generated by distant weather systems travel long distances and reach the shore. These waves often appear without warning and can be dangerous for coastal communities. The phenomenon is monitored by INCOIS, which issues alerts to help local authorities and residents take timely precautions.
Following the warning, district officials have directed fishers and coastal residents to avoid venturing into the sea. Small boats and canoes should not be launched, and attempts to launch or land fishing craft must be completely avoided while wave intensity remains high. All fishing vessels are to be safely moored in harbours with adequate distance between them to prevent collisions, and fishing gear should be secured properly.
Authorities have also instructed people living in vulnerable areas to relocate to safer locations as advised by local emergency response teams. Public activity along the shore is temporarily restricted, and beach tourism and recreational activities in the affected coastal areas are suspended until the alert is formally withdrawn. Officials have emphasised that travellers should avoid trips to the beach and refrain from entering the sea, urging heightened caution in areas prone to sea erosion.
The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and has activated emergency response mechanisms. Residents and fishers are advised to strictly follow safety protocols and cooperate with authorities to minimise the risk of loss of life and property.
