For much of the 20th century, intelligence test scores rose steadily across generations in many parts of the world — a phenomenon known as the Flynn Effect. But a growing body of research suggests this trend has slowed or even reversed in several developed nations, prompting scientists to investigate the possible causes.

A new study, published in the journal Intelligence, examines the so-called Reverse Flynn Effect, a term used to describe declining scores on certain cognitive tests among younger generations in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.

The researchers are careful to stress that these findings do not mean people are becoming inherently less intelligent. Instead, they point to environmental, educational, and lifestyle changes that may be influencing how individuals perform on standardized tests.

The original Flynn Effect, named after researcher James Flynn, was observed over decades of improving nutrition, healthcare, education, and living conditions. Experts believe those gains were largely environmental, not genetic. Now, the apparent reversal in some regions raises new questions about modern life.

According to the study, there is unlikely to be a single explanation. Possible contributing factors include changing education systems, increased reliance on digital technology, reduced reading habits, and greater exposure to online distractions. Widening social and economic inequalities, as well as environmental pollutants and poorer health in certain communities, have also been suggested as potential influences.

Importantly, the researchers note that intelligence tests measure specific cognitive skills like reasoning, memory, and problem-solving. They do not capture the full spectrum of human abilities, including creativity, emotional intelligence, or practical knowledge.

The decline is not universal. Some countries continue to record stable or even improving scores, suggesting that national policies, educational standards, and living conditions play a significant role. This variation offers clues about what might be driving the trend.

The authors call for more long-term studies to understand why these changes are emerging and whether they can be reversed. They argue that improving education, supporting healthy childhood development, and reducing social inequalities could help strengthen cognitive performance in future generations.

While the findings are intriguing, experts caution against over-interpreting the data. Intelligence is a complex and contested concept, and test scores are only one narrow measure. The study adds to a growing conversation about how societies can nurture cognitive skills amid rapid technological and social change.
