Kodavas Are Three Distinct Populations, Not One, Finds Genetic Study

A scientific paper on the genetic makeup of the Kodava (Coorg) community has been published by researchers from the University of Delhi, South Campus, and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad. Its central finding is that the community, long treated as a single group, is in fact made up of three genetically distinct populations.

The paper, titled 'Unique Demographic History and Population Substructure Among the Coorgs of Southern India', appeared in Communications Biology, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal covering research in biology.

Journalist and author P.T. Bopanna, who is shortly bringing out a book on the origins of the Kodavas based on the findings, said the study was led by Coorg-born Prof. Buttiyanda Kuttapa Thelma of the Department of Genetics, University of Delhi, South Campus. Her team carried out systematic sampling of the Kodava population across Kodagu using available genetic analytical tools.

The study separates the present-day Coorg population into three sub-groups, Coorg1, Coorg2 and Coorg3, each with distinct histories and genetic profiles.

Coorg1 shows a strong genetic component linked to tribal populations, with 70-80% ancestral south Indian ancestry. The study estimates that this group formed around 2,000 years ago through the admixture of a Palliyar-like group with another Dravidian group, used in the analysis as a proxy for the Mala.

Coorg3 is the oldest of the three, with divergence dating to about 3,000 years ago. It carries a distinct genetic component that does not match any contemporary South Asian or Eurasian population, according to the study summary.

The analysis further found that Coorg1 and Coorg3 came together to form Coorg2 only around 330 years ago. The study notes that this may partly explain the socio-cultural homogeneity seen among Coorgs today.

Even so, the genetics point to a more fragmented ancestry than the community's unified cultural identity suggests. Y-chromosome analysis indicates that male Coorg ancestors may have shared genetic ties with Eurasian and Middle Eastern populations, while female ancestors were primarily indigenous to South Asia.

The findings also shed light on migrations that shaped the subcontinent, pointing to male-mediated migration followed by assimilation with native women. The Coorgs appear to carry one of the oldest Y-chromosome lineages to have migrated from Central Asia into South India.

"They were among the first people to settle in India during the Bronze Age, before the majority of male-mediated migration, which includes the majority of caste groups in North and South India," the study notes.

Mr. Bopanna said the Coorgs have practised strict endogamy, marrying within the community, alongside family-level exogamy, that is, marrying outside the immediate family but within the community. Geographical isolation in the Western Ghats, he added, helped preserve distinct genetic boundaries.

He described the study as a landmark contribution to understanding South Indian ancestry, ancient migration patterns and genetic evolution, and said it underlines India's complex demographic history, marked by multiple ancient migrations and deeply divergent lineages.

Population genetics studies describe ancestry and migration history. They do not, by themselves, settle questions of social status, custom or identity, and scientific conclusions of this kind remain open to revision as more data emerge.
