India Dismisses Pakistan President's Denial of Role in Punjab Violence

On July 23, 1986, the Indian Home Minister, Buta Singh, rejected as 'bogus' the denial by Pakistan's President, General Zia-ul-Haq, of his country's involvement in terrorist activities in Punjab. Responding to a day-long discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Singh stated that India had repeatedly raised the issue with the Pakistan government through diplomatic channels, both in writing and verbally.

In a separate incident, a bus accident in Sri Lanka claimed 31 lives and injured 22 others. A Ceylon Transport Board bus struck a landmine in Mahamadhu, Vavuniya district, while travelling from Kochikattu to Vavuniya. The explosion reportedly hurled the bus 50 feet into the air.

Finance Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that loans extended to companies associated with Reliance in a debenture case would be recalled if found not to be used for 'proper' purposes. He added that a four-member committee appointed by the Reserve Bank of India was examining the 'end use' of these loans.

During the seventh round of Sino-Indian talks, India raised the issue of a recent intrusion by Chinese forces into Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh, described as the deepest since the 1962 war. Officials reviewed the eastern sector, with discussions focusing on the details of the incursion into the Sumdorong Chu valley.
