IIT Bombay to Set Up First Overseas Campus in US, Classes Likely by 2027

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay will establish its first overseas sub-campus in the United States, marking a significant step in India-US academic collaboration. The sub-campus will be located at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury, with the first academic session expected to begin in 2027.

The announcement followed a virtual meeting between IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Timothy E Sams, attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. A Letter of Intent has been signed to explore collaboration in engineering, multidisciplinary research, technology, artificial intelligence, and other emerging fields.

According to an official release, the partnership aims to develop new educational and research opportunities on the Long Island, New York campus. The institutions plan to introduce new academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels in science and engineering, with a focus on AI. Collaborative research initiatives are also on the agenda.

Professor Kedare expressed excitement about working with SUNY Old Westbury, noting that their complementary strengths could lead to significant achievements. President Sams described IIT Bombay as a world-class institution and said the partnership would advance teaching, innovation, and excellence in disciplines like physics and engineering, preparing future leaders.

Initial areas of cooperation include faculty and researcher exchanges, joint research projects, and organisation of conferences. India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, emphasised the importance of strengthening academic and technological ties. Secretary Vineet Joshi of the Department of Higher Education called the collaboration a new chapter in India-US higher education partnership.

Union Minister Pradhan described the partnership as a 'living corridor of knowledge' that would create mutually beneficial opportunities and support cutting-edge technology development. He urged both institutions to nurture future-ready students and contribute to global progress.

IIT Bombay, one of India's premier engineering institutions, is known for its faculty quality, research, industry partnerships, and academic excellence.
