IISER Tirupati Convocation: India Now a Technology Exporter, Says Top Scientist
Defence and aerospace scientist Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, a member of the National Security Advisory Board, stated that India has transitioned from a nation dependent on imported technologies to one that develops and exports them over the last two decades. He made the remarks at the seventh convocation of IISER Tirupati, held at its Yerpedu campus on July 10, 2026.
Addressing graduates, Dr. Reddy highlighted the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision and urged aspiring scientists to pursue careers in advanced research to address national and societal challenges. 'The country has made significant progress in technology development and skill enhancement. Research institutions like IISERs have an important role in strengthening India's scientific capabilities,' he said.
Dr. Reddy called upon graduates to focus on challenging scientific problems and develop innovative solutions through sustained research.
IISER Tirupati Director Prof. Santanu Bhattacharya presented the annual report, noting that researchers published 260 papers in reputed international journals during the academic year 2025-26. The institute's overall research output reached nearly 1,500 publications with 25,000 citations and an h-index of 70 by end of 2025.
External research funding from agencies such as the DST, DBT, ICMR, and Anusandhan National Research Foundation surged to ₹41 crore during the academic year, Prof. Bhattacharya said. The number of new patent applications filed reached 14.
C. Sayed Sahil received the gold medal for the BS-MS programme, Rayis T.R. and Siddhant Ray received silver medals, and Nandana Manoj received the 'Best student campus activities award'. Hari S. Bhartia, chairperson of the Board of Governors, presided over the ceremony, and Registrar Inderpreet Singh Kohli addressed the gathering.
IISER Tirupati was placed 20th among academic and research institutions in India in the Nature Index 2026, up from 33rd in 2025. The institute retains its position as a 'top-ranked research institution' in Andhra Pradesh.
