Government Clarifies Rajnath Singh’s Operation Sindoor Remarks After Social Media Misrepresentation
The Union government on Saturday rejected social media claims that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had stated that no Indian soldier was killed during Operation Sindoor. In a clarification, the Ministry of Defence explained that Mr. Singh’s remarks in Parliament were selectively quoted and stripped of context.
Mr. Singh, while speaking in the Lok Sabha on July 28, 2025, had said, “If you want to raise a question, then ask whether any of our brave soldiers were harmed in this operation. The answer is, no, none of our soldiers were harmed.” The Ministry said this statement was a direct response to a false narrative at the time that Indian Air Force pilots had been killed during the operation. The government accused sections of the media and social media of amplifying this misinformation to undermine the operation’s success and public morale.
The Ministry emphasised that the Defence Minister’s address highlighted the success of Operation Sindoor, during which Indian forces conducted precision strikes against terror infrastructure and military targets across the border. It stated that the operation resulted in the elimination of more than 100 terrorists and Pakistani soldiers, and inflicted significant damage on Pakistani air bases and military infrastructure along the Line of Control.
The clarification noted that Mr. Singh’s remarks were not a denial of casualties suffered by the armed forces. The government reiterated its commitment to honouring personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. It confirmed that the names of those killed during Operation Sindoor have been inscribed on the National War Memorial, and that welfare benefits—including educational and healthcare assistance—have been extended to the families of the fallen personnel.
A day after the government officially disclosed the names of military personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor, the Congress party alleged that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had misled Parliament by claiming that no Indian soldier was killed. The government’s clarification directly addressed this allegation, stating that the Minister’s comments were aimed at countering a specific false report, not at denying overall casualties.
The Operation Sindoor remains ongoing, with Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and Mr. Singh both affirming that the pause in hostilities is temporary and that Indian forces remain on high alert.
