Karnataka Legislature to Elect New Speaker, Council Chairperson on August 14
The Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council will elect their new Speaker and Chairperson respectively on August 14. The elections have been officially notified for Friday, coinciding with the ongoing Monsoon Session of the State Legislature, which begins on Thursday.
The Congress party, which holds a majority in the state, has announced its candidates for the two constitutional posts. G.S. Patil has been fielded for the post of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, while Saleem Ahmed has been nominated for the post of Chairperson of the Legislative Council. Both names were confirmed by the party ahead of the scheduled elections.
The need for fresh elections arose after the previous occupants of these offices resigned. U.T. Khader stepped down from the post of Speaker following his induction into the state Cabinet. Similarly, senior legislator Basavaraj Horatti resigned from the post of Council Chairperson, creating a vacancy that now needs to be filled through due process.
Until the new Speaker and Chairperson are elected, temporary arrangements have been made. Senior lawmaker T.B. Jayachandra has been appointed as Pro-tem Speaker, and Puttanna has been appointed as Pro-tem Chairperson. These appointments are standard procedural measures to ensure the smooth functioning of the legislature during the interim period.
The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly is a key constitutional position responsible for presiding over the sessions of the Assembly, maintaining order, and ensuring that debates and proceedings are conducted according to parliamentary rules. The Chairperson of the Legislative Council performs a similar role for the Upper House of the state legislature.
