FSSAI Issues 9 Notices to Swiggy Instamart Over Expired and Spoiled Food Products

India’s food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after multiple consumer complaints about delivery of expired, spoiled, or contaminated food products. The action highlights growing concerns over food safety standards in the country’s fast-expanding quick commerce sector.

The complaints included cases where customers received Healthify 100% Whey Protein (1 kg) past its expiry date, Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts that had also expired, and Akshayakalpa Organic Eggs that emitted a foul smell and appeared spoiled. In one instance, a consumer reported receiving a defective baby food product again after returning it, raising questions about inventory management and quality checks.

During its scrutiny, FSSAI also found issues related to contaminated milk and eggs, poor packaging, and improper storage conditions. Some products were sold without proper compliance with licensing norms, and mandatory licence details were not adequately displayed.

While refunds were often issued after complaints, recurring grievances suggested underlying issues were not fully addressed. FSSAI has now sought a detailed response from Swiggy Instamart, asking the company to explain the lapses and outline steps to strengthen quality control.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the regulator can impose penalties ranging from fines to licence suspension or cancellation. The action comes as quick commerce platforms become integral to daily life, promising grocery deliveries within minutes. This case is expected to intensify regulatory scrutiny across the industry.
