FSSAI crackdown: Amway, Juza Foods drop '100%' and health claims after notices

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its enforcement against misleading food labels and advertisements, prompting several companies to withdraw claims such as “100%” and unsubstantiated health benefits from their products.

Among the firms that have taken corrective action are Amway India and Juza Foods, both of which received notices from the regulator over alleged violations of labelling and advertising rules. The companies have since removed the questionable claims from their packaging and promotional material, according to official sources.

FSSAI, established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, is mandated to protect public health and ensure that food products sold in India meet safety and labelling standards. The Act prohibits false or misleading claims on food labels and advertisements. Under its provisions, any claim that is not substantiated by scientific evidence or that misleads consumers can attract penalties, including fines and product recalls.

The current enforcement drive targets a range of issues, including claims of “100%” purity or natural content, and health claims that suggest disease prevention or cure. For instance, products marketed as “100% fruit juice” or “100% natural” must actually meet those standards, while health claims must be backed by credible scientific data. FSSAI has previously issued guidelines on advertising, requiring companies to ensure that claims are truthful, clear, and not exaggerated.

Industry response has been cautious but cooperative. Several businesses are now reviewing their labels and advertisements to align with regulatory expectations. Some have already revised packaging, while others have withdrawn specific advertisements pending further verification. FSSAI has warned that it will not hesitate to impose stricter action, including legal proceedings, against those who fail to comply.

For consumers, this crackdown is significant. Food labels are a primary source of information for making dietary choices. Misleading claims can lead to health risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions. Unsubstantiated health claims may also cause consumers to rely on products instead of seeking proper medical advice.

The regulator’s actions are part of a broader effort to improve transparency and accountability in the food sector. In recent months, FSSAI has also introduced measures to tighten rules on front-of-pack labelling and to standardise serving sizes. The goal is to create an environment where consumers can trust the products they purchase and where honest businesses are not undercut by those who cut corners.

While the names of the companies involved have been revealed, the regulator has not disclosed the full list of notices issued. However, the move signals that no entity, regardless of size, is above the rules. As the enforcement continues, more companies are expected to fall in line, and consumers are likely to benefit from clearer, more accurate product information.
