Tamil Nadu launches ₹107-crore project to make State rabies-free
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced a ₹107-crore project to eliminate rabies, a significant step towards safeguarding public health across the State. The initiative was unveiled during the debate on demands for grants for the Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply Department.
School Education Minister Rajmohan, replying on behalf of the Chief Minister who handles the department, said the first phase of the project would be implemented in municipal corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats. This phased approach aims to prioritise urban and semi-urban areas where stray dog populations are concentrated.
The project includes the purchase of vehicles to transport street dogs after capture, implementation of an animal birth control programme, and the establishment of surgical centres and after-care centres. These measures are designed to manage the stray dog population humanely while reducing the risk of rabies transmission.
Rabies remains a serious public health concern in India, with thousands of deaths reported annually. The State's initiative aligns with the national goal of eliminating rabies by 2030, as advocated by the World Health Organization.
In addition to the rabies control project, the government announced several urban infrastructure projects. A multi-level parking facility will be built in Kanniyakumari at a cost of ₹40 crore to ease congestion for tourists visiting the coastal town. A multi-purpose commercial complex is planned at the Thanjavur Municipal Corporation.
The long-defunct Polpet bus stand in Thoothukudi, which has been unused for over 30 years, will be renovated at an outlay of ₹90 crore. The renovation will include a multi-level parking facility and a commercial complex, aimed at revitalising the area.
Furthermore, the government has allocated ₹20 crore to restore 30 water bodies in town panchayats. This initiative is expected to facilitate groundwater recharge, supporting environmental sustainability and water security in the region.
These announcements reflect the government's broader focus on improving urban amenities, boosting tourism, and addressing public health challenges. The implementation of these projects will be monitored by the respective departments to ensure timely completion and effective utilisation of funds.
