French Wildfires: Eyewitnesses Describe Flames, Evacuations, and Community Strain

Three witnesses of the ongoing wildfires in France have shared their experiences of fear, stress, and community solidarity as the blazes continue to threaten homes and landscapes.

Chris De Abreu, a British national who works in France and owns a flat in Bordeaux, described how the city was enveloped in smoke over the weekend. “The sun disappeared behind the smoke, leaving an orange-like filter over the city,” he said. Although De Abreu is less worried about his own property, which lies on the opposite side of the river, he noted that many people are anxious about what may come next.

In the coastal town of Biscarrosse Plage, about 63 km from Bordeaux, Rachel Hanberry told BBC Radio 5 Live that her beachfront home is located next to the town's evacuation point. “Everyone came here on Thursday night,” she said. “People had nowhere to go. We offered our home to people.” Hanberry added that the community has “lost so much” and described the “stress and trauma” felt by residents.

Further south, in Cotignac in the Var department, Jo Barnes and her family had evacuated for four days after a fire rapidly approached their property. “A wall of orange flames came roaring up over the hill,” Barnes recounted. She said that on Friday afternoon, the fire returned to within 10 metres of her home, near a gas tank. The surrounding hillside was blackened, but the town of Cotignac and the Barnes' home were undamaged.
